Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - March 22 2025 - A 12-year-old Indigenous student, Waaseyaa Couchi, has been absent from her London classroom since being handed a quiz that the Thames Valley District school board has deemed "harmful" and "triggering."
The quiz, which questions about Indigenous history and residential schools, trivializes critical aspects of Indigenous history, including residential schools and treaties.
Waaseyaa's father, Colin Couchie, also a member of the Nipissing First Nation, described the quiz as "offensive" and "trivializing critical aspects of Indigenous history."
Thames Valley officials have acknowledged the issue but have not taken sufficient action to help her return to her classroom.
Waaseyaa's father believes that an apology and a bag of candy given by the board is not enough to help her feel safe returning to her classroom.
