Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - February 19, 2025 - Toronto Water has been tasked with maintaining security at an ancient Indigenous burial site in Riverdale, Ontario, for over a year.
The excavation, which involved the discovery of human remains, has cost taxpayers at least $310,000.
The site was discovered when a sidewalk was not covered enough to prevent a pedestrian from falling into it.
The investigation has been ongoing, with the excavation covered by a tent and a fence.
Local residents question the cost and reasons for the sidewalk closure, as nothing has happened since the tent was pitched.
The city has maintained physical security around the clock since January 2024 to ensure the site is protected until the investigation concludes.
As of December 2024, approximately $310,000 has been invoiced for these security services.
The city is also working with First Nations to ensure the site is treated with respect and that they have the opportunity to be involved in the Burial Site Investigation process.
The security vehicle is considered a "Mobile Workshop" under the Municipal Code, as it is required to monitor the site and share regular observations with the city.
