Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - January 27, 2025 - The Navajo nation is addressing concerns about federal immigration actions targeting Indigenous Americans, following reports of negative experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants in the south-west.
The Navajo nation president, Buu Nygren, advises Navajo people to carry state-issued identification, such as a driver's license, other picture identification, or their Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB), to provide additional reassurance.
At least 15 Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico have reported being stopped at their homes and workplaces, questioned or detained by federal law enforcement and asked to produce proof of citizenship during immigration raids that began last week.
The number of Navajo or other Indigenous tribal groups involved in these actions is unclear, but officials have been in contact with the US Department of Homeland Security, the governors of Arizona and New Mexico, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).
