Utoo Radio, May 7, 2024 A class action was filed against a teacher, Maurice Cloughley, who sexually abused students in Nunavut schools between 1969 and 1981.

The court certified the case, appointed representatives, and appointed law firms Cooper Regel and Morris Moore as class counsel.

The Territory of Nunavut agreed to settle the case, with the Territory paying $8,000,000 to establish a settlement fund, $2,000,000 for Class Counsel's legal fees and expenses, and $15,000 for each representative plaintiff.

The settlement funds will be divided among class members based on their injuries, with up to $250,000 on each claim.

The representatives believe the proposed settlement is in the best interest of all class members and will avoid further litigation costs and risks.

The court will hold a hearing on June 4, 2024, and class members can attend in person at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit. The full notice and settlement agreement can be found at www.CloughleySexAbuseClassAction.ca.
