Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - May 6, 2024 - Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, is preparing for the approaching wildfire season with fluid planning and a focus on adapting to changes.

The town's emergency management plan has been updated, and residents are encouraged to download and test the Alertable app to stay informed about threats like wildfires. Regular meetings with the Local Emergency Management Organization (LEMO) are also planned to ensure collaboration for preparation and prevention.

The community has instituted a partial fire ban as a preventive measure due to low precipitation and high fire risk conditions. Last summer's wildfires forced residents to evacuate for five weeks, but small "holdover fires" continue to burn in the region due to "overwinter action."

Mike Westwick, wildfire information officer with the GNWT's Department of Environment and Climate Change, said that the situation is currently under control. However, the region is being closely monitored via infrared scanning missions to detect remaining smouldering areas.

Hay River has implemented measures to prepare for the threat of more fire, including creating new fire evacuation plans and improving communication with residents.

Glenn Smith, the town's SAO, highlighted the significant amount of fuel burned during the wildfire last year, emphasizing the importance of being diligent as fires can start anywhere. The public can see that there is a lot of work being done, which should calm some fear.
